Though cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is one of the important crop plants in Africa, Asia and Latin-America it has significant disadvantages such as containing toxic components (cyanogenic glycosides), and yieldloss during long time storage based on a biochemical proess, known as postharvest physiological deterioration (PPD). PPD is accompanied by the accumulation of products of the isoprenoid and phenylpropanoid pathways. In contrast to the analytical and spectroscopic data on terpenoids (e.g.22 diterpenes), few data have been published on the phenolic components of cassava roots present during PPD. Our aim is to identify these phenolic compounds and look at their qualitative and quantitative changes during PPD. |
