Cattle grazing, defecation and urination rates, growth, and mortality were studied on pasture formed from rain forest in the Amazon territory of Venezuela. Cattle consumed 12-16 percent of total aboveground plant productivity on two pasture sites. The nutrients it this vegetation were recycled to the soil in dung (N, P, Ca, and Mg) and urine (N and K). Nutrients recycled in cattle excreta were more available to plants and more spatially concentrated than nutrients in lietterfall. The stocking rates on two pastures sites were 0.43-0.89 animal units/ha, and cattle productivity ranged from 21 to 42 kg live wt/ha/yr. Nornharvested mortality was 20 percent per year, and there was no successful reproduction. The low growth rates, reproductive failuire, and part of the mortality may result from low phosphorus concentration in the grass. |

Embora a cv. -- Abstract: Avocado cultivation in Brazil has been expanding due to increased consumption and the state of São Paulo stands out as the largest producer. Recent studies have revealed that certain climatic conditions might change the characteristic reproductive behavior in avocado trees. The objective of this study was to collect data, even if preliminary, to evaluate the protogynous dichogamy of Fortuna and Quintal cultivars in the climatic conditions of the Ribeirão Preto region and to evaluate the fruit set. In the 2019-20 crop year, in an agroecological commercial orchard of the Sepé Tiarajú Settlement, flower opening was observed and flowering production and stigma receptivity were determined. Fruit setting was evaluated under two treatments: spontaneous self-pollination and natural pollination (control). The results revealed the occurrence of protogynous dichogamy, a typical reproductive behavior of avocado tree: flower opening at stage 1 (female function) did not overlap flower opening at stage 2 (male function) in both cultivars. However, in cultivar Quintal, stage 2 flowers were functionally hermaphroditic, a fact not yet reported in the literature, which extends the pollination period and may result in increased production. Spontaneous self-pollination did not result in fruit set, revealing the need for animal and/or wind-mediated pollination. Although cultivar Fortuna has showed higher flower production and fruit set per panicle than cultivar Quintal, the latter showed a higher fruit set rate, which could be related to hermaphroditism. Further works will make it possible to understand the impact of these results on the production of avocados.
