Soil preparation is one of the inputs with the highest energy and cost requirements in modern agricultural production. The present work compares five soil preparation systems; three with mechanical tilage and two using zero tilage. The tilaje treatments included; 1) Conventional tilage without any weed control; 2) Conventional tilage with two hand weedings during the life of the crop: and 3) Stale seedbend treatment. The two no tilage treatments consisted of 1) Cutting the vegetation to ground level and aplying glyphosate on the regrowth 15 days later, and 2) The application of glyphosate on the regrowth 15 days after cutting the vegetation 50 cm above ground level. Planting was executed 15 days after applying the herbicide. Yields of cassava when grown with beans was equal in all vegetation management systems. However, in monocrop, cassava yield were significantly superior in the plowed treatments. Bean yields were statistically greater with the zero tilage systems. Bulk density of the soil was significantly less in the zero tilage treatments than in the tiled treatments. |
