I would like to speak briefly about the use of organic fertilizars based on tropical, woody legumes. The legume family, includes three basic groups, all of which fix nitrogen. The best known group includes the generally herbaceous legumes of the Leguminosae itself. There are two other groups of legumes that are largely woody: the Mimosaceae and Caesalpinaceae. The Mimosaceae is a family of tropical, woody legumes that is widespread through the tropics, many genera having originated in Latin America. There are twenty-odd genera and 2000 species in this complex, and a number of these are of value as organic fertilizers in the tropics. One of the more interesting species in the Sahel of Africa is Acacia albada, a very drought-tolerant species which is providing fertilizer, feed and wood in significant ways in Africa (Tabele 1). |
