Mango ((Mangifera indica L.) is a difficult-to-root fruit tree. Its cuttings desiccate quickly and layers also do not normally regenerate roots sufficiently enough for successful propagation. It is propagated bygrafiting on seedling stocks. IBA has, however, shown promising root promoting effect on mango air layers (Guha Thakurta and Dutt, 1941; Singh and Teotia, 1951 and Sen et al, 1961). Recently Roy Choudhury and others working in this laboratory have obtained upto 80% success in layering of two important mango varieties, Fazli and Langra. Experimenting with cuttings Bose (1960) was able to prolong the turgid condition of cuttings and induce callusing by maintaining moist condition of the cuttings keeping them under gunny cloth cover frequently sprayed with water, but no rooting was obtained. |
