The nutritional status and the seasonal variation of N, P, Ca, Mg, K and S was evaluated in mango trees of three different soils in the Dry Pacific region of Costa Rica: Ustic Humitropept (Atenas), Typic Dystropept (Orotina), and Typic Ustropept (Liberia). The purpose of the research was to determine the nutritional condition of the orchards in relation to the soil concentrations in each region, and throughout the year. Three different tissue ages were sampled (the New Tissue was the last growth flush and thus the first one from the outside of the branch, the Intermediate Tissue which was the second one in the branch from the outside and the Old Tissue which was the one in the third growth flush from the outside), and two varieties: "Tommy Atkins" and "Irwin", N, P, K and Mg behaved as movile elements within the tree, while Ca and S were inmovile within the tree, Higher concentrations of N, P, K, and Mg and lower concentrations of Ca were found in cv. "Irwin" when compared with cv, "Tommy Atkins", N, P, Mg and S deficiencies were found in the three orchards. These low foliar concentrations of P, Mg and S corresponded to low ones in the soils. There were lower N, P, K, Mg and S concentrations during the periods of flowering, fruiting and fruit growth, while the Ca concentrations were associated to the rain pattern. Based on the results obtained in this study, sampling of the Intermediate Tissue in the time after harvest is recommended to obtain a homogeneous sample. |
