Cerrado is a savanna-like vegetation which occurs over a large area of central Brazil. It is characteristically composed of a seasonal herbaceous ground layer primarily of grasses and sedges, and semideciduous, variably dense shrubby and arboreal strata. Both herbaceous and woody species have a high degree of xeromorphism. Several environmental factors which appear to be associated with the presence of the cerrado vegetation are distinguishing. Rainfall availability is strongly seasonal with amounts intermediate to those of the surrounding vegetational provinces. Temperature is almost always adequate for plant growth and occasional frost may occur only towards the cerrado's southern limits. Soils under cerrado are predominantly deep and well-drained, have lowwater-retention capacity, and are extremely infertile. Fire is closelyassociated with cerrado. Naturally-caused fires have probably occurred somewhat frequently since the origin of the ecosystem, and man-set fires commoly occur once every few years. Four major hypotheses have been prposed in order to explain the origin, evolution and maintenance of the cerrado vegetation. They are: (1) cerrado is a derived vegetation which resulted from slash and burn or just from frequent burning of the once original mesophytic forest; (2) cerrado is a xeromorphic vegetation which evolved primarily to withstand seasonal soil water deficit; (3) cerrado is a vegetation which has evolved primarily and is highly adapted to thrive in soils poor in available nutrients which...
