Abstract: During 1958-9 at Samford Pasture Research Station, the dry-matter and protein yields of the Peru, El Salvador, Guatemala and Hawaii varieties of Leucaena glauca [Leucaena leucocephala] were measured in a half-acre trial established 4 yrs before and rotationally grazed by cattle for 3 yr. Samples of leaves, and of stems of 0.25 in. diam. or less were taken on 26 Nov., 1958, and 13 Jan., 18 March and 6 June, 1959, immediately before grazing. Total forage and protein yields are given for each variety. The Peru variety gave the highest dry-matter and protein yields (total mean yields of 11, 236 and 3217 lb/ac, respectively). Protein content of all varieties was highest at the second and third harvests and lowest at the fourth harvest.-S.M.J. |
