In a preliminary, Glycine max (L) Merr., genotype screening experiment the overliming of an Ultisol to neutrality resulted in different genotypes showing zinc deficiency symptoms in varying degrees. Certain genotypes showed severe symptoms resulting in very low yields while others appeared normal and yielded within expected yield levels. A range of intensities of Zn deficiency between these extremes was recordede for other genotypes. Tissue analysis revealed that the genotypes which appeared normal had normal P/Zn ratios while severe symptoms were associated with highly imbalanced P/Zn ratios. It was possible to divide the genotypes into two categories on the basis of sensitivity to P-Zn imbalances. The use of DRIS (Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System) norms improved the predictability of the condition. |
