The effectiveness of strategic measures for the control of gastro-intestinal parasitism in sheep on contamined pasture has been investigated. The measures studied were anthel-
mintic treatment of ewes at lambing, and of lambs at weaning, together with the movement of the lambs to clean pasture at weaning. Effectiveness was assessed in terms of pasture
larval counts, worm egg counts, lamb weight gain and post-mortem worm burdens. ewe dosing did not control the postparturient rise in egg count, due to rapid re-infection, and therefore had no influence on controlling subsequent lamb infection. Anthelmintic treatment
of the lambs was successful only in association with a move to clean pasture, and change of pasture alone was almost equally effective. However, these measures only controlled
the second wave of infection in July-August, and did not control an initial wave of infection in May-June, due to overwintered larvae, which was shown to cause a serious check in lamb weight gain. The influece of these measures in the epidemiology of infection is dis-
cussed, and it is concluded that the most effective control programme would necessitate
treating both ewes and lambs and moving to clean grazing at the end of May. |
