For many years the selection of breeding animals has been concentrated around reproduction skills, growth rate, feed efficiency and temperament. These traits still play an important role, but nowadays consumers and slaughterhouses are demanding high quality pork meat and price systems have been designed to pay for lean and not fat. Before the advent of ultrasound, backfat scan in live pigs was restricted to the use of a metallic ruler, which beside time consumption for operation, also require skin perforation of animals, which cause little wound and discomfort to them. The development of a non-invasive portable ultrasound equipment allowed to avoid those inconveniencies by providing fast, safety and precise measurements of fat depth. The present report describes the complete development of a portable ultrasonic instrument to scan backfat of live pigs including the design of electronic circuits and the details of the ultrasonic probe. The major problem in this kind of instrument is the design of an ultrasonic transducer, which have to meet some special features. In collaboration with the Ferroelectric Ceramics Group of the Physics Department-UFSCAR, was possible to develop the piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) to work at 2.1 Mhz to generate the short pulses, which is the basic principle of the equipment. |
