Abstract: Certain biochemical activities in the rumen of sheep and goat were investigated in the 2 different seasons. The seasons were based on the nature of the grazing material available to the animals; i.e., either green and succulent or dry and coarse. The biochemical reactions are indicative of the differences in the microbial set up in the rumen of the two species. In sheep the net increase in volatile fatty acids (VFA) during the first season was significantly more than in the second due to greater availability of more easily digestible fodder. In the goat the net increase in the VFA during the first season was less than in the second. This observation does not, however, contradict the conclusion made in the preceeding paragraph. The decrease was apparent and not real. It was in all probability due to the breakdown of VFA to gases. The reasons for this conclusion have been discussed in detail. The concentration of VFA in the CRL of both the species increased significantly in both the seasons 2-hours after feeding. However, the concentration of NH3 increased significantly only in the first season. |
