India is one of the top three countries to register phenomenal growth rate in area and production of soybean. The acreage under soybean during 1986-87 has increased to about 1.4 million ha. from 0.0003 million ha. in 1968. Research and Development activities in the country during the period have been thus rewarding, 28 improved soybean varieties to suit specific growing conditions have been evolved through domestic breeding programmes. Appropriate input demand at various stages of plant growth as well as plant protection and crop management practices under different agro-climatic conditions of the country have been standardized. High yield potential upto 4 and 3 t/ha has been realised in research plots and farmers fields respectively. However, national productivity of soybean in India has remained very low (0.7 t/ha). The gap between potential yield, research farm yield and yield in farmers fields has been very wide. The yield gap analysis, productivity constrataint analysis and measures to overcome them are discussed in an effort to harness potential yield of soybean. |
