Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the important fruit crops of tropical region of India, where it produces fruits in less than a year. The ripe fruit are eaten fresh or in processed forms as jam, soft drinks and ice-cream flavouring agent. Fourteen papaya varieties were collected from various sources to assess for their performance and physico-chemical characters. The seedlings of papaya varieties were raised and transplanted during the month of September, 1985. Five plants of each variety were planted with three replications in a randomized block design. The spacing adopted was 2.25 x 2.25 m. The crop was supplied with 200 g each of N, P205 and K20/plant, in the form of straight fertilizers in four equal split doses with an interval of 2 months starting from one month from the date of transplanting. |
