Conteúdo:  In the central-west region of Brazil, the seasonal distribution of rainfall generates an imbalance in the production of fodder. Moreover, during the dry period, the nutritive value of the fodder decays, due to the advance in the maturation of the plants. To alleviate this problem, several alternatives have been pointed out and used to supply food deficits in herds where basal feeding is like fodder plants, and the most usual is a conservation of fodder for the manufacture of silage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of additives on a chemical composition of the silage of Urochloa brizantha cv. BRS Piatã. The piatã grass used to make the silage was established in the experimental area of Embrapa Agrossilvipastoril in Sinop - Mato Grosso, being cut and ensiled in experimental PVC silos. Before ensiling, the crushed material was submitted to the different treatments: without additive - (control); With Sila Prime bacterial inoculant; With SilAll 4x4 SW bacterial inoculant; With milled grain corn (MGM); Crude glycerin (GB) and soybean molasses (MSJ) in the amount of 100 g.kg-1 of natural matter. The experimental silos were opened in different fermentation periods (3, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days). To perform the chemical analysis, approximately 500g samples of the material were collected at time zero and day 56, representing the last day of opening.

Conteúdo:  An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a crude antigen was evaluated of its performance to detect Babesia antibodies. The sensitivity and specificity were 98,0% and 99,0%, respectively. In agreement with the high specificity, no cross-reactions were verified with sera from calves inoculated three times with 10 Babesia bovis organisms. With regard to the comparison of ELISA and indirect fluorescent antibody test. (IFAT) in detecting antibodies against B. bigemina in calves experimentally infected with five Brazilian geographical isolates of this hemoparasite, IFAT was able to detect antibodies one day earlier in most of the calves sera. There was a good agreement between results shown by ELISA and IFAT with sera from an enzootically stable area (K=0,61). However, there was no agreement between these serological tests with sera from an enzootically unstable area (K=0,33). The ELISA was employed in an epidemiological survey using with 1,367 sera from four counties in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul and characterized this region as an enzootically stable area, since the prevalence ranged from 87,7 to 98,9%. Therefore, this ELISA with high sensitivity, specificity and performance similar to IFAT can be employed in serological diagnosis of B. bigemina.
