The MHC is the interface where the effector cells of the adaptive immune systems meet the antigenic peptides of pathogens. The MHC is a highly polymorphic molecular complex which, differently for each individual, selects the peptides to be presented to the immune systems. This selective process determines the quality and intensity of the immune response. In this review we will present an overview of the progress achieved in characterizing the caprine MHC and its influence on the course of two infectious diseases of goats, i.e. caprine arthritis encephalitis and cowdriosis. Additionally, we will present data on the characterization ot he caprine T-cell receptor repertoire and experiments performed with MHC-monozygotic goats. The immune response of these animals to a well-defined synthetic peptide derived from the CAEV Gag protein shows the dramatic influence of the MHC on the T-cell response |
