AU-PNUTS was developed by Album University to improve the timing of fungicide sprays for leafspot (Cercospora and Cercosporidium) control in runner peanut varieties commonly grows in Alabama. The timing of fungicide applications is based on a set of weather-driven events, mainly "rain events". A rain events is any day with more than 0.1 inches of rain or irrigation, or a night with a long period of fog. Peanut growers are required to monitor their local rainfall. Regionalized rainfall probability forecasts are then used to determine future rain events over the next five ddays so that fungicide applications can be made in advanced of a period of favorable leafspost weather. Field studies over four years have found that use of the AU-pnuts model resulted in fewer fungicide applications over the traditional 14-day spray schedule. Additional field studies have been conducted in Florida and Georgia with favorable results. AU-pnuts model information is dessiminated to cooperators using a computer bulletin board system and with recorded messages available by telephone. |
