A field survey of beef cattle herds in the eastern plains of Colombia was conducted to determine the spectrum and prevalence of cattle health problems present, to identify those diseases causing major production losses and to thus focus research priorities. Frequent abortions, a wasting disease called secadera, outbreaks of anaplasmosis, foot and mouth disease and calf diseases were major problems encountered. Clostridial diseases, anthrax and babesiosis were considered of lesser importance. Tick infestation, myasis and internal parasitism were noted as requiring constant control. Mineral deficiencies were manifested by frequent bone fractures anb an ill-defined syndrome called 'calambre'. Herd health practices were directed at the strategic use of commercially available vaccines, acaricides and anthelmintics. |
