In a Latosol of the Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuaria dos Cerrados (EMBRAPA-CPAC), at 15 graus 35'S and 47 graus 42'W, the effect of irrigation on flowering and production of pure seed of Stylosanthes guianensis var. vulgaris cv. Minerao was determined. A trial was conducted between June and August 1992, the season of minimum rainfall in the area. Irrigation was applied when soil tension was less than 6 bars. In each irrigation, 90 mm were applied in 6 hours, which was enough water to reach the field capacity of the soil. The results show that it is possible to produce up to three times more pure seed (> 250 kg/ha) of S. guianensis var. vulgaris cv. Minerao in the Brazilian Cerrados by applying irrigation in the dry season than when irrigation is not applied (80 kg/ha). |
