The effects of applied N, P, S and Ca and seed pelleting on nodulation, N2 fixation, crop yield and crop quality of cowpea and soybean under tropical conditions is reviewed. Uncer tropical conditions application of small amounts of N are needed for well-nodulated soybean and cowpea in soils with low N status; P, S and Ca are needed in areas deficient in these elements. More work is needed to identify varieties that will grow and nodulate well in acid soils. Seed pelleting appears promissing for acid soils. The importance of K and micronutrients for nodulation and N2 fixation in cowpeas and soybean under tropical conditions needs further investigation. Fertilizer application and nodulation increase the crude protein content of soybean seed and cowpea leaf. |
