Abstract : Data are tabulated for 1976, 1977 and 1978 on Dorset and Suffolk sheep imported from the UK. Lamb birth weight (6-15 lambs per group) ranged from 3.32 to 4.06 kg in Dorsets and from 3.40 to 4.20 kg in Suffolks. Weaning weight of lambs (at 3 mth) ranged from 11.83 to 22.57 kg in Dorsets and from 12.07 to 24.38 kg in Suffolks. Body weight of lambs at 12 mth (2-5 lambs per group) was 19.00 and 41.72 kg in Dorsets in 1976 and 1977, and 26.00 and 38.00 kg in Suffolks. The percentage of ewes mated ranged from 70.83 to 90.91 in Dorsets, and from 85.00 to 93.75% in Suffolks. The number of lambs born per 100 females mated ranged from 71.43 to 107.14 in Dorsets, and from 40.00 to 69.23 in Suffolks. Six-monthly greasy fleece weight averaged 1.46 kg in Suffolks and 1.29 kg in Dorsets. In general, greasy fleece production decreased over the study period, due to climatic stress. |
