Since the first settlers moved into the thorny deciduous forest of Northwestern Brazil, the Caatinga, common grazing cattle, sheep and goats has been used to harvest the range resources of that region. Research on a private ranch of Taua county at the Southwest corner the State of Ceara is evaluating the technical and economical viability of complementary grazing and the potential of the goats as a biological controller of invading brushes. Brush controls studied were: no control (A); chopping and burning of the ligneous species (B); selective herbicidal control of brushes and trees by one of the ruminant classes or combinations (C). During the dry season 1980, cattle lost weight at a treatment A and gained at treatments B and C. The average gains were: 19.3 kg, 4.8 kg and 26.0 kg per head for A, B and C respectively. During the wet season of 1981, the bovines averaged 59.3 kg, 73.6 kg and 101.7 kg of gains per head on A, B and C treatments. The goats gained 9.4 kg, 8.8 kg and 10.7 kg per head on A, B and C, during the dry season, and 3.6 kg, 11.2 kg and 8.9 kg per head on the same order of treatments during the wet season. Sheep showed identical performance as goats. Gains were depressed on treatment A during the wet season, but responded positively on treatment B and C. Goats did depress cattle weight gains at any treatment or season, but did not affect sheep gains. Sheep did not influence cattle gains, during the wet season. As for live weight production, goats were superior to any ruminants class or combination on treatments A and B during the dry season. Sheep presented the best performance on treatment C. For the whole year, goats were the best option for treatment A, the Native Caatinga. Goats, or goats plus cattle were the best for treatment B, and cattle or cattle plus sheep presented the best performance on treatment C MenosSince the first settlers moved into the thorny deciduous forest of Northwestern Brazil, the Caatinga, common grazing cattle, sheep and goats has been used to harvest the range resources of that region.
