Seednut selection in Tall coconut cultivars is faced with the problem of variation in the size, shape, weight, length and volume of nut and thickness of mesocarp (or husk). Vigour estimated in seedings from ten groups of nuts in relation to their size, shape and four accompanying characters indicated that nuts in group VI with medium size, length, weight, volume, uniformly round shape and fairly thick mesocarp are most fit as seed nuts. Germination rate was found negatively correlated with weight of nut and thickness of husk. Girth of nine month old seedling was correlated positively with weight of the nut, thickness of husk, lenght of nut and volume of the whole nut. The number of leaves produced per unit period, height of the seedlings and width of the leaf during the ninth month were independent of the nut characters. However during the twelfth month of growth the width of the leaf alone developed a significant and positive correlation with the mean lenght of the nut. A high degree of variation for size, sahpe, weight, thickness of mesocarp and volume of whole nut is observed in seednuts of tall cvariety of coconut palm. Peter and Jayaraman (1977) reported variations for the nut characters in a cultivar of tall variety in the east coast and stressed the need for selecting mother palms with desirable seednut characters. Ummarkutty (1955) compared seedlings obtained from seednuts with and without craks at the pistillar end and those with persistend and non-persistent etc... |
