The object of this work was to objectively study the conduct of the sexual courtship and the exploration of the Andalusian stallions in a natural direct mount. 69 services were controlled during the reproductive season of 1998. All the stallions submited to study belong to the CRE and R n.3, located in Ecija, Seville. Throught direct observations and real times the records correspondent to quantitative as much as qualitative characteristics of behavior and referring to various parts of the mare which were smelled and licked (84% are in the perineal area or escutcheon) or bit with the lips (from 1 to 4) and teeth (1 to 5). The stallions showed Flehmen close to a 52% and the number of times this reflex repeats itself during the mount oscillates between 1 and 14 times with a mean of 1.71 (sd 0 2.73 and se = 0.32). This concludes that the stallions in a natural direct mount perform a discreet sexual courtship, probably due to the condition of the mount, since the stallion approaches the mare in a direct form until reaching the mount. |
