The taxonomic position of Agrobacterium radiobacter strain 204, used in Russia as a crop growth promoting inoculant of cereals, was confirmed using 16S rDNA sequence analysis and genomic DNA-DNA hybridisations against the type strain of Rhizobium radiobacter. It was determined that Agrobactetrium strain 204 is not an N2 fixer, is non-phytopathogenic, and does not form a physical association with the roots of barley (Hordeum vulgare), It seems likely that the mechanism of action of A. radiobacter strain 204 on growth of cereals is via the production of plant growth promoting substances. This hypothesis will be assessed in further work. |
