Abstract: Data on an experimental flock of 7294 lambs of Segureña breed were used to estimate heritabilities of birth weight, weaning weight, weight at 90 days, preweaning growth rate, postweaning growth rate, and correlations among these traits. A simple breeding-value model, as well as a maternal-effect model, were used in single-trait and multi-trait analysis. Results obtained with multi-trait analysis largely agree with those from the single trait. Heritabilities ranged from 0.15 for postweaning growth rate to 0.51 for weaning weight. Genetic and phenotypic correlations among traits were all positive. Additive maternal effects always explained a smaller proportion of total variance than did additive direct effects. Non-additive maternal effects were not important. Correlations between additive direct and maternal effects were all negative and relatively high within the same trait. It was concluded that weaning weight is the best selection criterion for improving weight at slaughter age (about 90 days). Models to be used for breeding-value prediction should include maternal effects. However, the use of a simple model like the breeding-value model could be envisaged due to its simplicity of computation. The efficiency of the breeding-value model versus the maternal-effect model should be evaluated. |
