Laboratory experiments shown that when heather has been burnt, mineral nutrients, particularly potassium, are readily dissolved from the residual ash. The rate of solution is reduced if combustion is carried out at a higher temeprature. The potential losses throught downward drainage of rain water are decreased because the soil retains nutrient ions from the percolating solution. This effect is most pronounced in organic and clay soils and less so in sandy soils. Losses of dissolved nutrient are possible where surface drainage occurs over impervious soils, althrought such losses may be reduced on wetter moorlands throught adsorption by Sphagmum. Over half the carbon, nitrogen and sulphur in the heather are driven off with the somoke. Most of this is in gaseous form althrought it includes aqueous and tar-like volatile products. Where any loss from the plant-soil complex does occur as a result of burning it seems that precipipation can restore the mineral nutrient balance within a short period except on porous soils. Replacement of nitrogen by rainfall takes longer but microbial action may be of importance in this respect. |
