In the present work a number of ecological aspects of nodulation and nitrogen fixation of the alder (alnus glutinosa) and the sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) are describ. Although both plants are common in Europe, only few reports of quantitative field have appeared in the literature (Delver and Post, 1968, Stewart, 1966, Stwart and Pearson, 1967, Ed. Trappe et al., 1968 and Virtanen and Miettinen, 1963). Root nodules were found on all the alder plants tested. However, submerged roots and roots in the mud never bore nodules. Investigations on different trees of ages up to 20 years showed that the relative weight of living nodules with respect to the total weight of the whole plant was approximately constant. On trees of approximately 25 years of age the number of nodules varied from about one hundred up to more than one thousand per plant, with a total dry weight of 74 to 317 grams. The total amount of living nodules in the investigated natural alder vegetations varied between 84 and 444 kg nodule dry weight per hectare. Most nodules on 25 year old trees were found to be younger than 4 year old and only few exceeded 10 years of age. Manytimes a part of the old nodules was dead. Moreover, a large quantity of necrotic nodule tissue of different ages was present on the root system. It was concluded that during the growth of the plants new nodules are continuously formed on young parts of the root systems, but many of them dying within a couple of years. The annual production of root-nodule tissue on the trees....
