The banana genetic breeding program, initiated at Embrapa Cassava and Tropi-cal Fruits in 1983, is mainly focused on the improvement of diploids and fur-ther crosses of these diploids with AAB Prata and Silk type triploids, generating AAAB tetraploids. The main objective is to develop varieties resistant to pests and nematodes that are productive, with reduced height and crop cycle, maintaining the Prata and Silk fruit flavors. The objective of this work was to characterize 26 accessions (diploids, triploids and tetraploids) from the Banana Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Cassava and Tropical Fruits, Cruz das Almas (Bahia, Brazil) using four chemical characteristics and 13 SSR markers. Wide genetic variability was detected for the measured variables. The Nei and Li coefficient was the basis for UPGMA cluster. In relationship of the functional compounds, highlight for the carotenoid contents in diploid Jaran (8.23?g?g-1) and Malbut (6.88 ?g?g-1); flavonols in the access Pipit (4.68mg?100g-1) and M-48 (4.08 mg?100g-1) and for vitamin C in the tetraploid Teparod (76.83 mg?100g-1). The average number of alleles per primer was 7.23, with a total of 94 alleles identified. The average similarity among the all accessions was the 0.34, range from 0.001 up to 0.76, indicating the existence of wide genetic variability between genotypes. New pa-rental combinations can be identified with base of the divergence between these accessions, contributing for the development of new cultivars preventing the nar-row genetic base MenosThe banana genetic breeding program, initiated at Embrapa Cassava and Tropi-cal Fruits in 1983, is mainly focused on the improvement of diploids and fur-ther crosses of these diploids with AAB Prata and Silk type triploids, generating AAAB tetraploids.
