A P. juliflora and L. [Diplachne] fusca agroforestry system on an alkaline soil at Karnal was studied at 2 P. juliflora spacings for 3 years after planting in 1984-87. There were no significant differences in the height and diam. of P. juliflora or in the number of branches at different spacings, but growth was significantly improved by lopping. The oven dried biomass obtained from lopped branches over a 40 month period was greatest at 2 X 2 m spacing. The green forage yield of L. fusca was greatest under P. juliflora spaced 4 X 4 m apart and was markedly improved under lopped P. juliflora. The inorganic composition of the L. fusca, including trace elements, made it a valuable fodder in an area with an adverse alkaline soil environment. The Ca and K content of the grass increased and the Na content decreased in successive cuts. Soil pH and electroconductivity decreased while organic C and available N content of the soil improved. |
