Several investigations have been carried out for the conservation of natural vegetation and improvement of pasture in the desert regions particularly the western strip of the Mediterranean littoral of the U.A.R. Previous studies have shown that the success of artificially seeded ranges depends upon the ability of the species to profit from the prevailing environmental conditions of the region. One aspect of this problem is the germination behaviour in establishing a stand. Therefore, it would be of great interest to study the optimal conditions required for seed germination of some desert native and introduced range plants.
WENT (1953), reported that among the factors affecting seed germination in the desert, temperature, and rainfall, play the important roles. In the present ~tudy attention has been directed to the effect of temperature, rainfall, salinity, and depth of sowing on germination of seeds of several range plants. The selected species included in the present study are five native plants namely: Ononis vaginalis, Panicum twrgidum, Oryzopsis miliacea, Pennisetum dichotomum, and Pennisetum ciliare; and five introduced ones (from Montana and Arizona, U.S.A.) in 1956, namely Medicago sativa, Chloris gayana, Panicum antidotale, Panicum maximum, and Panicum colomtum. |
