The amount of nitrogen fixed by various legumes grown on newly converted lowland to upland Maahas clay soil in two seasons was estimated by acetylene reduction technique. One week after thinning, the nitrogen fixing activity of different legumes was measured at least bi-weelky until maturity except at the later part of the second cropping. Samples were collected from 7:00 to 8:00 AM and nodulated roots as well as the nodules detached during preparation were used for assay. One-tenth atmosphere of acetylene was introduced into the assay flask and the samples were incubated in the laboratory for one hour. The gas in the flask was analyzed for ethylene by gas chromatography. The amount of nitrogen fixed was determined by extrapolating and integrating the nitrogenfixing activity determined periodically. Nitrogen fixing activity of legume showed a marked diurnal variation. It was low in the evening as well as during the sampling time but high in the daytime. Generally it was at the early stage of growth, increased rapidly at flowering and then decreased at maturity. In the 1972 cropping, Shih Shih soybean harvested as green bean fixed the largest amount of atmospheric nitrogen, the mung bean, the least: Shih Shih soybean, 123 kg/ha N; CES434 soybean, 99 kg/ha N; cowpea, 22 kg/ha N; bush sitao, 30 kg/ha N; mung bean, 12 kg/ha N. Large proportion of the total nitrogen uptake of soybean was contributed by nitrogen fixation. About 73% of the total nitrogen uptake of CES434 soybean was contributed by nitrogen fixation, ...
