Six 12-kilogram seed lots each of the dare, Hill, Lee 68, Davis, Bragg, and Tracy soybean varieties were contaminated with 50 grams each of purple monoflower seeds and processed through two spiral separators equipped witn 12.7 cm (5) and 12.5 cm (6) inner flights, respectivele. Purity analysis, standard germination, weight per 1,000 seeds, and accelerated aging tests were conducted on the material discharged through each discharge spout of the separators. Wile more effective in removing purple moonflower seeds from soybeans, the spiral separator with 12.2 cm (6) inner flights consistently removed pure soybean seeds (3.8% maximum vs 0.63% maximum) than the spieral separator equipped with 12.7 cm (5") inner flights, even though these seeds low in quality. Separation was influenced by both shape of the seeds which varies with soybean variety and width of the inner flight. Regardless of the flight width used, soybean discharged trrough the left-sede (left-hand) accept spout of spiral separator were more vigorous than those discharged through the right-side (right hand) accept spout. In all the separation tests, more pirple monflower seeds with two flat iner faces removed than those with curved inner faces or flat shaped. |
