Soybean roots develop more fully in soils of good tilth and respond rather dramatically to even small changes in soil density. I have not discussed but recognize the affect of high water tables, low fertility (mainly K) and toxic elements (Mn and Al) on root growth. Generally, in the Atlantic coastal plains soils, these are of small consequence compared to root restriction caused by soil compaction. In years of abundant rainfall deep root penetration may not be necessary for maximum yields; but since these soils have a very small water holding capacity, there are few years that droughts do not occur. In the southern coastal plains area the depth of subsoiling should depende on depth to clay. Fields with an A2 horizon at 15 inches should be subsoiled to 16-18 inches to insure root penetration into the clay. Subsoiling to a depth of 12-14 inches would be entirely inadequate. When penetrometers or soil probes do not indicate the existence of compacted layers, subsoiling or any form of deep tillage is unlikely to result in increased yields. Soil variations from farm to farm and field to field make it arbitrary that selection of tillage equipment be made only after thoroughly studying existing soil conditions. |
