study of this system was carried out in 1965-1972 on sown legume-grass and grass pastures on sod podzol soil in the forest zone. The objective of the study was the metabolism of principal mineral substances (N, P, Ca, K) and some microelements (Co, Cu, Fe, Zn) assimilated by the planted herbage from soil and fertilizers and entering animal organism with fodder. In the first stage "soil-plant" the intake rates of main mineral substances from soil reserves (N - 30-35 kg, P - 5-23 kg, K - 30-90 kg per ha per year) were determined and the paramount importance of using a fertilization system which corresponds to the sward composition was demonstrated as a means of facilitating high yielding capacity of sown pastures. It was found that the amount of fertilizer utilization by pasture yields depends on soil conditions (acidity, moisture and others). The relevant calculations were made by means of agrochemical and radiobiological methods. In the second stage "fodder-animal-animal products" the subsequent transformation of substances in mtabolic processes of an animal organism was studied. As a result of balancing tests on pastures, adequate intakes of N and K were determined. Considerable variations in N utilization on legume-grass (from 15 to 65 per cent) and on grass (from 29 to 48 per cent) are revealed. Some differences in Ca and P supply are found to be dependent on sward type. The intake of nutrients from herbage has been determined by means of a balance feeding of animals. A number of tests was carried out with supplemental feeding of animals with carbohydrate fodders of different composition to increase the utilization of N from pastures forage. As a means of eliminatinga phosphorus deficiency the animals were given supplementary phosphorus containing diets. The microelement content (Co, Cu, Fe, Zu) in the milk of cows from grass pastures was found to be lower and it was increased by applying a set microelement fertilizers.
