Studies on the effect of different intensities of grazing stress on forage production in a rangeland with gras scover of Lasiurus-Aristida at Chandan (District Jaisalmer of western Rajasthan) situated in low rainfall zone with sandy soils, were under-taken during 1965 to 1971. Treatments comprised of: (T1) light intensity of grazing stress, continuous controlled grazing by heifers on yearlong basis; (T2) heavy intensity of grazing; (T3) moderate intensity of grazing; (T4) heavy intensity of grazing (as in T2) plus supplemental feeding to heifers; (T5) grazing as in T3 plus supplemental feeding to heifers. The annual rainfall during 1965 to 1970 was 62.3 - 258.8 mm. Forage yield was significantly affected by grazing treatments and by amount and distribution of rainfall. Grazing of the rangeland at carrying capacity level gave highest forage yield, while the lowest yield was obtained under the stress of heavy intensity of grazing. Lasiurus sindicus, a principal perennial species of the tract, contributed over 60% of the total yield. Different grazing treatments did not significantly affect the forage yield of Lasiurus, but its yield was significantly affected during different yeras due to interaction of seasonal effects. Ir is concluded that the forage yield of a dryland range is highly related to the amount and didtribution of rainfall and the grazing stress. |
