In a field experiment on a sandy loam soil (Typic dystrochrept) root growth and potassium uptake of three rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars were investigated at tillering, flowering and grain ripening stages, under increasing levels of nitrogen. As the crop growth advanced and/or with enhanced supply of N the total root length and dry weight increased in all the varieties whereas root depth remained virtually constantbeyond the flowering stage. Application of 100kg N/ha increased the K uptake by 63 to 70 per cent. The significant and positive relationshipof total root length with K uptake in the rice genotypes tested suggested that enhanced morphological development of the root system would contribute considerably to higher intake of potassium. |
