Plant community structure is influenced by climate, altitude, topography, and soil characteristics, with soil attributes playing a critical role in species distribution. This study examined the effects of soil and topography on the floristic composition and structure of a Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest (SDTF) within a 10,000-hectare state park in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Vegetation sampling was conducted in 2010 across 170 plots (1.7 ha) representing nine soil classes. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) and generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to assess soil effects on floristic composition, species richness, and forest structure. The analysis indicated significant variation in floristic composition in relation to the predictors. However, the contribution of soil was low when compared to the spatial effect. Soil attributes impacted vegetation structure, with potassium and sand content affecting tree basal area. Species richness, however, showed no soil influence. Although much of the floristic variation remains unexplained, spatial factors emerged as primary drivers of floristic composition. This result is consistent with neutral theory and highlights the need for broader predictors to understand SDTF dynamics at local scales better. |
