Abstract: The relationship between the dominant genetic factor for polledness, and testicular abnormalities and male infertility in the Saanen breed was studied on 110 polled males born in 1962. Of these, 47 had at least one horned parent (group 1), 44 had a polled dam and a heterozygous polled sire (group 2) and 19 had a polled dam and a homozy- gous polled sire (group 3). Infertility was deter- mined by results in the field, or by testicular exa- mination in the field, and in doubtful cases by examination of semen, and pathological exami- nation of testes. All told, 19 males were completely infertile, 3 were fertile but showed typical clinical abnormalities, and 3 were fertile, but showed atypical clinical abnormalities. The incidence of male infertility or typical clinical abnormalities in groups 1, 2, and 3 respectively, was 0.0, 36.4, and 31.5 percent. It is concluded that male infertility in the Saanen breed is a recessive effect of the polled factor. Penetrance of the effect is incom- plete, and expressivity is variable. |
