Growing legumes with cereals is a common feature of indian agriculture. Most of these legumes are seed-mixed and sown within the rows of cereals. Sowing legumes in alternate rows with maize, a practice which could be called intercropping, is rather uncommom in India. With the introduction of hybrid maize during recent years and the recommendation for wider (75-90cm.) row spacing as well as balanced fertilization that includes phosphate as one of the principal components, there is a strong prima facie case for examining possibilities of growing legumes as intercrops with hybrid maize. |
