Sorghum is a promising energy crop due to its high productivity and adaptability to adverse conditions. Among sorghum hybrids, BRS 716 stands out for its exceptional biomass yield, optimizing land use. This study investigated the biogas and methane production potential of BRS 716. The Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) of the biomass (296 ± 4.4 LN Kgvs add − 1 ) was consistent with previously reported values, confirming the effectiveness of the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The high fresh biomass yield of 117 t ha− 1 translates into an estimated methane yield of 11,316 m3 ha− 1 , approximately seven times higher than reported for sweet sorghum cultivars, highlighting its energy recovery potential and contribution to economic viability and environmental sustainability. Additionally, a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) was operated for 182 days with stepwise increases in organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.5 gVS L− 1 reactor d− 1 . Optimal performance occurred at an OLR of 2.5 gVS L− 1 reactor d− 1 (Phase V) with a maximum productivity of 0.50 LN CH4 L reactor − 1 d− 1 and a 200 LN CH4 kgVS − 1 yield. From 3.0 gVS L− 1 reactor d− 1 , propionic acid accumulation (above 570 mg L− 1 ) caused inhibition. Microbial analysis revealed increased diversity in Phase V, with a predominance of the genera Sedimentibacter, Ruminofilibacter, HN-HF0106, Proteiniphilum, and Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17, associated with lignocellulosic degradation. Methanosarcina dominated the archaeal community, and genes related to acetoclastic methanogenesis and lignocellulose hydrolysis were predicted in higher abundance. These results demonstrate that BRS 716 combines high biomass yield with efficient AD conversion, offering significant potential for large-scale biogas production from energy crops.
