Tillage can have a profound effect on the aeration conditions of soil depending on the initial condition of the soil and the subsequent rainfall. Of the aeration measurements available, oxygen diffusion rates best describe the soil-plant interactions. Because the aeration effects are transient, the measurements must be performed punctually during the period of aeration stress. Data from aeration studies can be very useful in describing the beneficial effects of tillage on plant growth and yield. |
