Abstract : Average daily milk yield in the first week of lactation of 26 multiparous Jamna Pari goats aged 2 to 5 years was 1233 g; it increased to 1310 g in the second week then declined to 503 g in the 12th. Corresponding yields for 24 similar Barbari goats were 979, 1058 and 580 g. The yields of Barbaris with first kids were 736, 845 and 426 g at those times. In a comparison of multiparous Barbari goats lactating in winter or the rainy season yield was about 30% less in winter. Average liveweights of Jamna Pari and Barbari multi-parous goats, respectively, after kidding were 47.41 and 24.88 kg. During the first month of lactation they lost 8.8 and 8.9% of bodyweight. Averages for high yielders were 46.66 and 31.68 kg liveweight and 15.2 and 16.3% loss. The goats were fed on concentrate of equal parts of gram, barley, wheat bran and groundnut cake, 750 g daily for Jamna Pari and 250 g for Barbari, with browsing on fallow land for 8 h a day; the feed was not considered sufficient.-T.
