Since the mehods for the analysis of pyrethroids described in the literature apply to the analysis of grains and little has been reported on the analysis of corn, various of these methods were tested in order to choose the most adequate method and adapt it for the analysis of corn husks and ground corn ears. The recoveries in the clean-up phase were first determined using the methods of Mestres et al. and of Hascoet and Andre, resulting in recoveries of 96,0 +/-3.1and 98.0+/-2.0%, respectively. After evaluating the accuracy, precision, ease, speed and cost of analysis, the clean up method of Hascoet and Andre was chosen. The various extraction methods were then tested. The best recoveries were obtained using the method of Gorbach and Thier modified for use with husks and ground ears. The total recoveries for the extraction and clean up, performed in triplicate, for each contamination level were 89% (1 ppm), 98% (0.4 ppm) and 81% (0.1 ppm) for ground ears and 81% (1 ppm), 91% (0.4 ppm) and 89% (0.1 ppm) for husks. |

Run-of-the-river hydroelectric dams cause changes in seasonal inundation of the floodplains, and this may cause displacement of semi-aquatic vertebrates present before dam construction. This study evaluated the movement of crocodilians before and after the filling of the Santo Antonio hydroelectric reservoir on the Madeira River in the Brazilian Amazon, which occurred in November 2011. We radio-tracked four adult male Paleosuchus palpebrosus and four adult male Paleosuchus trigonatus before and after the formation of the reservoir between 2011 and 2013. The home ranges of the P. palpebrosus varied from < 1 km2 to 91 km2 and the home ranges of the P. trigonatus varied from < 1km2 to 5 km2 . The species responded differently to time since filling and water level in weekly movement and home range. However, overall the dam appears to have had little effect on the use of space by the individuals that were present before dam construction. |
