Citrus leprosis is considered the main viral disease for Brazilian citrus industry, particularly for the State of São Paulo, due to the high costs spent for the chemical control of its vector, the tenuipalpid mite Brevipalpus phoenicis. Understanding complex pathossystems, such as citrus leprosis, which comprises a viral pathogen (Citrus leprosis virus CiLV) a susceptible host ( Citrus sinensis) and a mite vector, is a great challange and involves the study of interactions between and amongst the components. The fact that CiLV induces only localized lesions in its hosts increases the importance of the vector in the epidemiology of the disease, since its dissemination in the field is strictly dependent on the mite. It has been reported that the CiLV-Brevipalpus interaction is of propagative manner. In order to confirm that, we carried out a series of biological experiments to determine the acquisition and inoculation periods of CiLV by B. phoenicis and the cytopathic effects induced by the virus in infected cells. Additionally, the detection and quantification of CiLV in viruliferous vectors was performed by RT-qPCR. Our data indicates that the virus-vector interactions is of circulative- and not propagative- manner. |
