Indexing of coorg mandarin (Citrus reticulata) orchards showed that citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is widespread in Coorg district. The prevalence of seedling yellows (SY) strain was found through indexing and confirmed by aphid transmission studies. Toxoptera aurantii was found to be an efficient vector of CTV and SY component. Eventhough a single aphid was capable of transmitting the disease, maximum transmission was obtained with 20 or more aphids. Preacquisition fasting of the aphids increased the efficiency of acquisition. Transmissions were obtained at minimum acquisition and inoculation feeding periods of five-minutes each. The aphids retained infectivity up to 3 h beyond which they became non-viruliferous. None of the six mild isolates tested gave complete protection against all the 12 severe isolates challenge inoculated. |
