Abstract: Climate has been implicated as a major influence on both rate of citrus fruit developement and final external and internal quality. Warm climates (tropical) can advance naturity date by as much as six months for valencia oranges when compared to a cooler (mediterranean) climate. These same warm conditions result in much faster degradation of acidity and poor colour development, while Brix levels are usually lower than in a moderate subtropical climate. Rainfall and irrigation are necessary at reasonable levels to assure good brix accumulation, but excessive amounts of soil water result in oversize fruit with diluted soluble solids content. |
