The soluble sugar contents of the tropical grasses, Setaria sphacelata Staph and Hubbard (C.P.I. 28709, commercial variety Nandi) and Chloris gayana Kunth (C.P.I. 16144, commercial variety Samford Rhodes) can be much too low to ensure satisfactory production of lactic acid when they are ensiled (Catchpoole 1965). In temperate countries silage quality is often improved by addition of molasses to increase the quantity of sugar available for conversion into lactic acid. (Watson and Nash 1966 p. 301 and Barnett 1954 p. 10). |
