Banana (Musa spp.) breeding programs focus on achieving disease resistant and high yielding genotypes which could replace long term cultivated susceptible ones. In Brazil?s central plateau, favorable climate conditions, besides increasing com-mercial demand, created an environment in which banana could be successfully grown. Therefore, 22 banana genotypes from Embrapa?s Banana Genetic Breed-ing Program are being cultivated in an irrigated field assay at Embrapa Cerrados (Planaltina-DF, Brazil) to test their on-field disease resistance, yield and agronomi-cal behavior. Genotypes ?Grand Naine?, ?Bucanero?, ?FHIA-02?, ?FHIA-17?, ?Prata Anã?, ?Maravilha?, ?FHIA-18?, ?PA42-44?, ?PA94-01?, ?Garantida?, ?Pacovan?, ?Pa-covan Ken?, ?Japira?, ?Vitória?, ?PV79-34?, ?PV94-01?, ?Maçã?, ?YB42-03?, ?YB42- 07?, ?Tropical?, ?Thap Maeo? and ?Caipira? were transplanted to the field in January 2008, following a randomized complete block design with three replications. Each plot received 6 plants spaced at 3 m × 2.5m. Weeding, fertilizations and water man-agement were performed properly. In the 1st cycle evaluations, no symptoms of Black and Yellow Sigatoka were observed. Also, only a single plant of ?Maçã? showed typical symptoms of Fusarium Wilt and failed to produce. Anthracnose symptoms were detected mainly on fruit of ?Caipira?, ?Pacovan? and ?YB 42-03?. Time to bloom varied from 280 (?FHIA-18?) to 390 (?FHIA-17?) days, while harvest period varied from 400 (?Garantida?) to 520 (?PA 94-01?) days after transplanting. Bunch filling period, from bloom to harvest, varied from 105 (?Caipira?) to 160 (?PA 94- 01? and ?Pacovan?) days. Highest yields were obtained with ?Grand Naine? (35.0 kg/ bunch; 46.7 t/ha) and ?FHIA-17? (32.8 kg/bunch; 43.7 t/ha), while genotypes ?YB 42-03? (9.2 kg/bunch; 12.2 t/ha) and ?Maçã? (10.2 kg/bunch; 13.4 t/ha) had the lowest. Although still preliminary, these data showed that some banana genotypes included in this study have great potential for future commercial cultivation under Cerrados? environmental conditions.
