Defining corn kernel damage in terms acceptable to all segments of the corn industry is an impossible task. Therefore, limited definitions which meet specific needs are required, Our goal is to evaluate the performance of field shelling machines with respect to mechanical kernel damage. Several popular definitions and measures do not meet the unique requirements of this evaluation. Corn breakage, test results meet most of the requirements and correlate best with the actual kernel fragments (fines) created by the shelling machine. Breakage tests can also be used to evaluate drying and handling operations. |
